The first thing to think about is a cage. There are different minimums for each of the animals we talk about, and some of them require different amounts of companionship. Hamsters should not be housed together past 4 weeks as they will start fighting. Hamsters are solitary animals are will fight to the death. Similarly, male mice should be kept alone. Female mice and gerbils should always be kept together with at least on other cage mate of the same gender. Gerbils will chew through almost any plastic you provide them with, so glass tanks are a safe option. For a pair of two gerbils, a minimum of a forty gallon tank should be provided. Bigger is always better. In the gerbil owner community, an easy DIY tank is an IKEA Detolf. This provides enough space for a group of bonded gerbils to burrow and forage in. In the U.S. hamsters in a minimum size of a 40 gallon breeder fish tank. Most pet store cages will not meet this minimum. Mice should be housed in a bare minimum of 450 square inches of floorspace, but again bigger is better! DIY bin cages (see video to the right) are a great option for both hamsters and mice! Fill these up with at least 6 inches of suitable bedding. These include paper bedding such as clean and cozy, care fresh, or all living things, or aspen wood shavings. Make sure your paper bedding is unscented!

It's very hard to find proper food in pet stores, so many people chose to make their own. You can do this by looking up the small animal's necessary nutritional values, them comparing them to the food mix you plan to feed them. Gerbils and hamsters both benefit from Higgins Gourmet Sunburst for hamsters and gerbils but, as hamsters need a bit more protein, you should mix it with Mazouri Rat and Mouse Food if you are feeding a hamster. Mice are a bit more finicky, so I suggest watching the whole video (right) to understand their food cocktail. Of course, do more research to find the perfect mix for your mice!
A good mix of hard wood chews and softer store bought chews or cardboard DIY chews should be readily available to your small pet, whose teeth are constantly growing, and toys for enrichment. Make sure that your small pet has a big enough wheel, nothing smaller than around 8 inches for the smallest species of hamster.
